Cardboard laser marking enables manufacturers to apply batch data, dates, product references and traceability codes directly to suitable paperboard packaging and boxes. The process creates a non-contact mark without transferring ink or ribbon to the coding area.
At Macsa id, we assess the cardboard grade, coating, printed surface, colour, required contrast and production conditions. We then validate the code on the real pack before defining the final laser configuration.
Cardboard is used in folding cartons, sleeves, trays, point-of-sale displays and corrugated transit cases. Depending on the surface and code requirement, direct laser coding can be assessed for:
For 2D codes, visibility alone is not enough. The symbol must also meet the required reading conditions. Where relevant, code content and quality can be defined in line with GS1 standards.
CO₂ laser technology is commonly used for suitable paper and cardboard applications. It can create direct codes on folding cartons, paperboard packaging and selected corrugated surfaces.
The final mark depends on the board composition, coatings, recycled content, print layers and colour. Therefore, every application should be tested on the final packaging material.

A direct laser mark can be assessed on unprinted, printed, coated or varnished cardboard. However, the required contrast and surface effect can vary considerably between materials.
Macsa id tests the selected coding area to define the appropriate laser parameters, optics and code design.
Cardboard laser marking can support a wide range of industrial and packaging applications:

Laser is not automatically the right solution for every cardboard pack. For example, shipping cases with large logistics information, customer data or carrier labels may require print-and-apply labelling or high-resolution inkjet coding instead.
Macsa id reviews the packaging format, message size, variable data, line speed and handling conditions. This allows us to recommend the technology that best fits your production process.
Cardboard quality can vary between suppliers, batches and recycled-content levels. Send us a sample of your box or packaging, together with the required code and production conditions.
We will assess code contrast, readability, surface appearance and integration before recommending the most suitable solution.
