Plastic laser marking

Plastic is the most versatile material in today’s world. Its mechanical and thermal qualities mean we can mould them into almost anything. Engineering plastics such as ABS, Polycarbonates and Nylons are more robust and are typically used for smaller or low-volume applications such mechanical parts, rather than for high volume such as containers and packaging. Below, we will explain more about its use and plastic laser marking.

The great diversity within plastic materials means there is a diverse range of solutions available for marking information. Macsa ID’s wide range of lasers including CO2, Fibre and UV technologies can be used for plastic laser marking directly, depending on the specific plastic. Labelling systems also provide a robust, easy to implement option.

ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

ABS is a common thermoplastic polymer. Thanks to its amorphous qualities, it has no true melting point. The styrene that is part of this material gives it a shiny and resistant surface, while the rubbery substance of polybutadiene gives it hardness.

These specific characteristics of ABS make it the perfect material for applications such as automotive components such as car bumpers, blood access medical devices, keyboards and small kitchen appliances.

Laser engraving on plastic: Polycarbonates

Polycarbonates used in engineering and manufacturing are strong and durable materials. Because they can be easily molded or thermoformed, as well as being impact and scratch resistant, polycarbonates have a wide variety of applications. Unlike most thermoplastics, polycarbonate can withstand large plastic deformations without cracking or breaking.

Its range of applications includes electrical and telecommunications hardware, construction materials such as flat or curved glass and sound walls, automotive/aeronautical and security components such as reflectors, headlight lenses and bulletproof glass, and more everyday applications such as beverage bottles , food containers and eye protection.

Plastic laser marking: Nylons

Nylon, a silky thermoplastic material, can be processed into fibers, films or shapes. The composition of this material provides, among other characteristics, excellent resistance to abrasion and sunlight, with high durability. Despite being a clear, colorless substance, it stains easily, making it ideal for many commercial applications.

Prominent commercial applications include fabrics and fibers (garments, flooring, and rubber reinforcements), in forms (molded parts for automobiles, electrical equipment), and in films (particularly for food packaging).
